Medicare Planning
Navigating Medicare With Confidence and Clarity
Medicare decisions are among the most consequential financial choices you'll make in retirement. Mark helps you understand your options, avoid costly mistakes, and choose the coverage that fits your health needs and budget.
Why Medicare Planning Matters
Most people approaching Medicare eligibility feel overwhelmed by the alphabet soup of Parts A, B, C, and D — not to mention Medigap supplements and enrollment windows. A wrong decision can mean years of higher premiums, coverage gaps, or penalties that follow you for life. As a licensed insurance agent and financial advisor, Mark approaches Medicare planning the same way he approaches every financial decision: with care, clarity, and a commitment to your long-term wellbeing.
Understanding the Parts of Medicare
Part A — Hospital Insurance
Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services. Most people pay no premium for Part A if they or their spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.
Part B — Medical Insurance
Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment. Part B requires a monthly premium, and late enrollment can trigger a permanent penalty.
Part C — Medicare Advantage
An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurers. Plans often include prescription drug coverage and may offer dental, vision, and hearing benefits.
Part D — Prescription Drug Coverage
Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. Plans vary widely in formularies and premiums. Choosing the right plan for your specific medications can save hundreds of dollars per year.
Original Medicare vs. Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Original Medicare covers roughly 80% of approved costs — leaving you responsible for the remaining 20% with no out-of-pocket maximum. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy fills those gaps, giving you predictable costs and the freedom to see any Medicare-accepting provider nationwide. Mark can help you compare Medigap plans and determine whether a supplement or a Medicare Advantage plan is the better fit for your situation.
"The right Medicare plan isn't the cheapest one — it's the one that protects you when you need it most."
Enrollment Windows — Don't Miss Them
Missing your Initial Enrollment Period can result in permanent premium penalties and coverage gaps. Mark helps you map out your personal enrollment timeline so you never miss a critical deadline.
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
A 7-month window around your 65th birthday — 3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after. This is your primary opportunity to enroll without penalty.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
Available if you or your spouse are still working and covered by an employer group health plan. Allows you to delay Part B without penalty.
Annual Election Period (AEP)
Runs October 15 – December 7 each year. Use this window to switch Medicare Advantage plans or change your Part D drug plan for the following year.
